To Start a New Blog?

This post is (14/31) of the Blaugust 2019 event! You can find out more about Blaugust over at Belghast’s blog. I (Chestnut) created a Twitter list of all participants. UltrViolet created an OPML file of all the bloggers to import into your feed reader.

I’ve hit a point in Blaugust where I’m running out of steam. Not only just a lack of time, but a lack of topics (possibly tied to the lack of time, because I’ve tons of draft posts!). Well, I take that back, I have a bunch of topics I’d love to write about, but they’re more NSFW-related (games, comics, etc.). Yes, I swear a bunch here. Yes, I am beyond lewd. But there’s a line. There’s a line between “mature audiences” and “almost or actual pornography”.

I’ve been waffling for a few months on whether I should start another blog for those that cross the line into “almost or actual pornography”. I could work it into my NSFW job (click at your own risk) no problem. But then what about the posts I want to write about modding The Sims 4 to be dirty? Or reviewing an erotic visual novel I’ve been playing? Or what about reading that comic that isn’t quite NSFW but flirts with the line enough that I don’t want to write about it on this blog? (Unnatural. It’s Unnatural by Mirka Andolfo. Though Sunstone by Stjepan Sejic falls into this category as well.)

I don’t feel like there’s an easy answer to what I should do. I have a blog name idea, but I don’t know if I should go with free or a hosted domain for now. Especially since I want to try to figure out a domain where I can add sub-domains to link to things like my content sites.

Normally I’d just make a decision and run with it, but I feel like I’m at an impasse and am being extra cautious for unknown reasons. And I’m aggravated at myself for feeling so dang stuck.

I ask myself this a lot–not NSFW stuff but I’ll think “maybe I should start a knitting blog” or “maybe I should start a cooking blog” or whatever hobby is grabbing my attention most at the time. I wonder if people reading my existing blog will even want to see that content. Of course, pictures of yarn are a bit less controversial. I wonder if WordPress has a plugin that would allow you to tag some posts “NSFW” and then people could optionally hide or show them?

A plugin might be a possibility to look into as well, but then how would it play with feedreaders is another question.

For what it’s worth, I spent a lot of time at first with SFW stuff going, “Well I’m doing crafty things, should I include them?”. And I essentially came down to, if folks don’t like reading about it, they can skip the post, because who wants to put the time and effort into TOO MANY outlets? At the end of the day, we’re multi-faceted people, and we can enjoy things outside of gaming, even if we classify our blogs as “gaming blogs”. To be honest, some of my favorite posts from folks have been non-gaming related, even though they’re blogs are centered around gaming. 🙂

Wait, The Sims can be dirty? Tell me more!

If you want to be free to do what you please, you probably need to self-host. I know WP.com can get weird about the dividing line for porn, and I guess they just bought Tumblr, but only after the great porn purge. Blogger lets you flag for adult content, requiring viewers to login in order to get past it, but it is still Blogger.

Resource management is what I’d be looking at first because time is always in short supply. Can you really keep two blogs running or is just one difficult to keep up to date? Does your host allow for such content with NSFW tags/hiding options? Are you able to post that content in a way that you won’t feel embarrassed about it on your main blog? Why would it embarrass you anyway?

The good news is there is no wrong answer to your dilemma, because ultimately you’ll pick what works best for you. You just have to ask the right questions. 🙂

Thanks for giving me some more questions to think about! They’ll help me think about it a little more focused, I think. 🙂

A new blog sounds like the best idea, but the domain question is hard.

Maybe a new subdomain of this one? something.gamergirlconfessions.com might make sense and allow you to keep things vaguely together. That’s what I’ve been doing with my domain and it works quite well. Keeps them separate but aligned.

    Good luck deciding!

Thanks! I don’t know that I’d do a subdomain related to this one. After ruminating, some, I’m thinking of just doing a free WP blog and attaching a subdomain to it from a different URL. But I still haven’t decided, lol.
