Currently Nerding April 2020
Inspiration At the start of April, Bel posted about some games he was regularly playing, and it inspired me to try something similar. Except, I’m not playing a bunch of games, lately. I’m nerding out over different things, though, so I figured in line with my goals now being called “Nerding Goals” instead of “Gaming Goals”, that this wrap-up of the month would be best to be named similarly. These wrap ups may or may not cover things that are in my goals for the month. Sometimes, things just hit me differently during the month for whatever reason, and I’d still like to talk about them, but it’s not enough…

Humble Bundle Binge
Free Month of Humble Choice Apparently, when I picked up the COVID bundle (mainly for some comics), I also received a free month of Humble Choice. I got the email, and decided to redeem it and see what it was all about. I picked up: Gris: This was on my wishlist, but was one I decided not to pick up during the LudoNarraCon sale, so I obviously had to pick it up from Humble Choice. Hitman 2: I’ve wanted to try out the series eventually, and it was there, so I figured might as well get it. This is the Police 2: This is not up my alley at all,…

Staying Motivated Week: “Productivity”
Staying Motivated Week We’re almost at the end of Blapril! We’ve hit Staying Motivated Week, and next week is the final Blapril week where we discuss lessons learned. Bel outlines Staying Motivated Week as follows. Towards the end of the proceedings we start to have a drop off in post frequency as folks hit their writing wall. The idea behind this week is to share the tips and tricks that we have learned throughout the years on how exactly to stay motivated and keep posting on a daily basis. I feel like this is even more relevant this year since we are all going through massive disruptions to our usual…

LudoNarraCon 2020
LudoNarraCon? As I was catching up on others’ blogs, I stumbled upon Krikket’s posts about LudoNarraCon. LudoNarraCon? So I went to their website. They define themselves as, … [A] digital convention celebrating narrative video games, hosted on Steam. An initiative of indie label Fellow Traveller, it aims to create a platform to showcase and celebrate interesting and innovative narrative games, replicating as many of the aspects and benefits of the physical convention experience as possible within a digital format. Okay, how did I not know this was a thing until today?! Story-driven narrative games are my JAM! I’m glad I caught Krikket’s posts about it so I could make the…

Seriously Geeky Sundays: Creativity
Seriously Geeky Sundays It’s time again for Seriously Geeky Sundays, hosted by Heather of Just Geeking By! This week’s prompt is all about creativity and quirkiness in fandoms! Heather also has her May prompts already available, so be sure to check them out if you’re interested in joining. My answers for this one are surprisingly all from television series this time! Creativity What does creativity in fandoms/geeky interests mean to you? I feel like my answer is a bit of a cop-out, but really anything that folks create inspired by their fandoms. That could range from blog posts, to video essays, to fanart/fanfic, etc. It’s kind of a boring answer,…

Cycle Continues
CW: COVID talk I was reading Bel’s blog the other day, and a fairly personal piece of his strongly resonated with me. Especially this paragraph. The thing is… I feel horrible for feeling horrible. My life is a freaking charmed existence because … my wife and I both have jobs that we can do remotely and stay safe and sheltered within our home. I am risking nothing while there are folks who are struggling to feed themselves, while we have stockpiles of food that we are slowly working our way through. I resonated with this paragraph, and many following, because it details how I’ve been feeling as of late. I…

MOFPS? Is That An Acronym?
Paladins I decided to go back to Paladins a few days ago to try and scratch the PVP itch that randomly hit me. I am not necessarily the best at FPS games, but I played Paladins in beta (I couldn’t tell you why, off the top of my head) and thoroughly enjoyed the cards system. I wasn’t half bad, either. I mean, I’m no e-sports pro, but I could hold my own most days. I stopped playing, for whatever reason, but decided since I had an idea of what the systems looked like (and it was free) that I’d go hop in and try it out again. I’ve been having…

Space Itch
As I read Blapril posts, I’ve been seeing a fair bit of EVE Online popping up, specifically from Mailvatar and The Ancient Gaming Noob. Seeing these posts have been making me feel nostalgic to going back. So much has changed since about 2012, not only in the game, but in my life. I’ve lost touch with pretty much all of the folks that made the game worth playing, whether through my divorce, them passing, or just also moving on to other games. I was in a Wormhole/Mining corp for the majority of my play time in EVE, and I don’t know that I would feel comfortable putzing about low-sec/null-sec on…

Statistical Which Character Personality Quiz
Full Results I first saw this floating around Facebook, but didn’t pay much mind to it until I saw it floating around the blogosphere. Endalia was kind enough to link it in the Blaugust Discord, so I saved it for a rainy day. Today is that rainy day. You can take the personality test for yourself here. You can find my full results here. I’m only going to post my top 10 from the full results, and then dive into some of my favorite fandoms! Willow Rosenberg (Buffy the Vampire Slayer): 79% Luna Lovegood (Harry Potter): 75% Donna Moss (The West Wing): 75% Kaylee Frye (Firefly + Serenity): 75% Alice…

Appreciating Soapers
Developer/Creator Appreciation Week It is Developer/Creator Appreciation Week for Blapril. On Bel’s Blapril announcement post, he defines this week as follows. One of the things that has happened over the years with Blaugust is that it enveloped some of the better ideas from other events and combined them as part of the single month long celebration. Years ago Scarybooster started this idea of devoting a week to the sharing our love of the Developers and Studios behind the games that we play. Last year this morphed a bit to also include a celebration of the various content creators that we enjoy as well, so I am officially tweaking the name…
